1/32nd Scale Railway Modelling

May 2011

The world of 1/32 Gauge One modelling continues to take positive steps and in the following few words I will attempt to summarise the changes as I see them. I am not attempting to comment on each development as there is by now too much going on.

In general

Slaters have finally produce their beautiful kit for the Kirtley Goods, not for me but a superb model of a lovely pre grouping locomotive, complete with inside valve gear and an exquisite crank axle all ready formed. Wheel for 48DS kit now available, next wagon kit likely to be the Midland brake van I hear that the pattern for what will be another cast in oner esin body has already been made.

The very talented John Dale of Old Originals produced his kit for the Ruston 48DS, buildable into several variations, notably "key hole" or enclosed cab types, this is priced at £85.00 for the etches and castings, with the buyer to source wheels, motor and gears, As mentioned above, Slaters have produced the wheels, not on their web listing as I write this but order reference F8830R at £13.48 per axle inc VAT.

Available from me in my new shop, together with a complete range of Slaters 1/32 wheels, couplings, buffers etc, and the three so far 1/32 wagon kits.

Tower Models and Finescale Brass continue as the two sources of imported brass RTR in this scale, with a number of new items having been made. Tower's L&YR "pug" looks especially lovely to my eyes. Trevor Taylor's Gauge One model company is also still operating, more at the "live steam" end of things. Talk of RTR Mark One coaches continues but at a somewhat subdued level - I'll still believe in them when I see them......

G1MRA

After the 2010 AGM it seems to me that we members of G1MRA have acquired a somewhat more progressive committee, I am looking forward to positive developments and hope to contribute to the future one way or another.

Personal trains

I am at last making some tangible progress in the garden, but I have set myself an enormous task. Here are some recent scenes to give you an idea of what I am about..

Steve Harrod's magnificent "Albion" hauling a Ken Martin PMV and a Tower Models mk 1 coach.

D6319 hauls a G1 Model Company mineral wagon, suitably improved by Steve Harrod, with my "Toad" at the rear.

D6319 pilots Roger Fry's immaculately turned out D6333 on a westbound freight.

Newly finished Iron Mink and GW 2 plank (Modified Barrett kit and resin body on John Dale chassis respectively) in the autumn sunshine.

I am using Cliff Barker's code 180 rail and sleeper/chair units, with all of the web completely removed. I stick the track down with "Gripfix" and then ballast over this. I have put Cliff's super elevation wedges under the curves, one every three sleepers, and use cornish granite sand (suitably sieved) as ballast. I apply this dry, create the shape I want, and then thoroughly dampen with water with washing up liquid added from a garden mist sprayer. Once thoroughly damp, I drop on SBR diluted about 50% with water from a disposable pipette.

I built the point from Cliff's turnout parts, special chairs, point timbering and pre machined point blades. Soldering is easy using phosphoric acid as a flux.

If you know of any product or information which should be added to this site, then please let me know.

Simon Dunkley's superb 5 plank wagon soaks up the autumn sun out on the line somewhere.

The intention of this site is to build a point of reference and centre of information for all individuals with an interest in 1/32nd scale standard gauge modelling. The fact that most prototypes discussed are British reflects the author's first interest and that outside of the UK Gauge One is generally practised at 1/32nd scale already.

The author of this site is Simon Castens, who takes responsibility for all opinions expressed and any mistakes that might have escaped his attention. If you would like to comment on anything written here, then please do so!
