W94 THE POWER STATION

Whiminster's electricity supply is generated sustainably by WIMAGILAG (Whiminster Municipal & General Incandescent Lighting and Generating Company) at its water-powered works on the edge of town. The large waterwheel drives a chain of buckets which lifts water so that it can flow down through three water turbines. Two of these drive large generators while the third powers a couple of four-bladed propellers which provide just sufficient airflow to drive a number of wind turbines on windless days. Some of the electricity generated powers the internal railway system operated by Phoebe, although a standby diesel generator ensures that trains can always run and that deliveries of coal to the adjoining manager's cottage are uninterrupted. The picture shows that all generating has stopped for a labour intensive hour of routine maintenance, something residents of Whiminster have learnt to cope with on most days!
