W31 THE BOAT LIFT

The river port of Quill, in Whimshire, is the starting point of the Myrtle Canal and the terminus of the Portersfoote Bunting Light Railway line from the north of the county. Because of the hilly nature of the river bank at this point, both canal and railway are high above the water. In order to allow canal craft access to the river without loss of water from the canal, as would be the case with ordinary locks, Isaac Plogg designed a unique steam powered boat lift which, on a good day, is capable of transporting boats to and from the canal with little loss of water. In the background PBLR Dichlamydeous shunts vermilion wagons through the tunnel towards the top of the railway incline down to the quayside.
