A33 THE AUTOMATED ARTIST

Plogg's Patent Plein-Air Painting Carriage, seen here in its prototype form, will surely revolutionise the art world. Landscape painters firstly need to stoke up the small steam engine, which can not only propel them to a favourite location, but also provides power to activate both paint brushes and palette knife. All the artist needs to do is trace with pencil the intended brush strokes onto the glass screen of the converted plate camera, guided by the projected image of the chosen scene. A prismatic device on the lens ensures that this image is the correct way round and not reversed. A pantograph links the tracing pencil to steam valves beneath the camera and these operate the painting brush via flexible rubber pipes, enlarging the image as they do so. An array of specialist brushes is provided and beginners will no doubt welcome the inclusion of a range of ready-mixed paints.
